Method overview

MaterialUnit’s method defines how its work is carried out in practice, across different contexts, projects, and relationships.

The method is not procedural in the sense of fixed steps.
It is a way of working built around judgement, coordination, and clearly defined responsibility.

Its purpose is to support material decisions without displacing the roles of designers, consultants, or technical specialists.

Working with context, not templates

MaterialUnit does not apply a standardised process.

Each engagement is shaped by:

  • the nature of the material or system

  • the maturity of the target market

  • the structure of the project team

  • the procurement and specification environment

The method adapts to context rather than forcing alignment to a predefined workflow.

This allows involvement to be proportional, appropriate, and limited to where it adds value.

Advisory as informed positioning

Methodologically, advisory work is used to establish clarity before action.

This includes:

  • identifying positioning risks or misalignments

  • clarifying expectations around specification, exposure, and outcomes

Advisory is not used to justify predetermined decisions.

MaterialUnit’s role at this stage is to:

This support operates alongside architects, consultants, and suppliers.

MaterialUnit does not author specifications, approve technical solutions, or assume design responsibility.

Boundaries of responsibility

Clear boundaries are integral to the method.

MaterialUnit:

  • does not take technical or contractual liability

  • does not replace appointed consultants or specialists

  • does not act as a decision-maker within the project team

Instead, the method focuses on stabilising decisions by improving clarity, alignment, and understanding at key points in the process.

Representation as a contextual outcome

Where representation occurs, it follows the same method.

It is applied selectively, based on:

  • clarity of positioning

  • relevance to the market and project context

  • alignment with long-term objectives

Representation is not treated as a default commercial outcome, but as a continuation of an already aligned working relationship.
